Pamper Yourself Gluten Free Vegetarian Split Pea Soup

Whenever I visit my parents I get chosen as head chef and wind up doing a lot of cooking. One of my favorite things to make probably because I love it is Split Pea Soup. And that is exactly what I am making today a big batch of Split Pea Soup. My directive was to use as many carrots as possible in whatever soup I decided to make. Since I know my dogs LOVE the carrots from Split Pea Soup I decided that is what I would make.

1 lb of Dry Green Split Peas rinsed
1 large onion chopped
4 cloves of garlic chopped (can use garlic powder)
4 carrots chopped
salt & pepper to taste
7 cups of water to start with

1 stalk of celery
Chili Garlic Sauce from Huy Fong Foods
For non Gluten Free / Soy Free Eaters you can add your favorite Vegetarian Hot Dog 30 minutes before serving

Brown onions and garlic in oil in soup pot. Don't worry if they start to stick to the pot you can always add a bit of water to un-stick them and the extra caramelized onions just makes the soup taste better.  Once the onions have started to brown add the carrots and if you are using celery add that now as well. Cook until the onions are very caramelized and the carrots become vibrant orange. Add the split peas. I don't know if this actually does anything but I toast the split peas before adding water. Once you feel the split peas are toasted enough add the 7 cups of water and bring to a boil. Keep an eye on the soup in case there is a lot of starch in the split peas so it doesn't boil over. I tend to keep it boiling pretty vigorously for about a half hour and then lower the light and let it cook for several hours. (at least 2 but you can have this soup cooking all day as long as you keep an eye on it.) You will want to make sure it doesn't get too thick as the split peas break down just add more water.

onions, garlic, and carrots ( I added extra carrots in bigger pieces to pull out)

My mom is not what you would call a cook in fact she has very few "meals" she prepared for us when we were growing up but she could always figure out how to open those little bags of Split Pea Soup Mixes. Now that I am older and have developed a number of food allergies I can no longer use the just add water and boil mix bags and have to make it from scratch.

There is no reason that you couldn't make this in a crock pot and brown the onions and garlic right in the crock pot while you are getting ready in the morning. The before you leave put in the carrots and other ingredients and cover with water and allow to cook while you are at work or running around with the kids. You can even put this up the night before and have it nice and hot for a late wake up on the weekend.

A Holiday Blogging Event for Animals in Need

We here at Two Little Cavaliers have been thinking long and hard about what to do for the Holidays that would be different and fun. Something that would benefit the blogging community and the animals we all care so much about. I know you have all seen the blogging events where bloggers get together and offer cash prize to the winner of a Giveaway for liking them on Facebook or following them on Twitter. Well this event is going to be very similar only the cash prize will be split between the winner and a animal charity of their choice (charity must be a 501c3 and have a track record of saving animals) be it a local shelter, canine cancer, a service dog organization, or even a wildlife preservation organization.

Bloggers can sign up to promote their Facebook Fan Pages, Twitter links, and their Google+ pages for just $10 for all 3 links. The $10 will be split in the following way $6 to the winner's charity and $4 towards the winner's cash prize. Instead of having you transfer the payment to my Paypal account I have set up a chip in widget this way we can all see how much money has been collected. Payment MUST be made in US dollars in the full amount of $10. We are aiming for at least 35 blogs to participate in this event all promoting and cross promoting the event and giveaway for the most exposure for everyone.

Don't worry people will not need to follow 35 blogger 3 separate ways all at once in order to be eligible to win. During the course of the two weeks you will put up three separate posts all of which you will receive the html code for in advance. The winner will be chosen from the 3 Raffelcopter widgets via Since I am the one who will be in charge of contacting the winner all participating bloggers will be eligible to enter to win the giveaway.

We hope you will sign up to participate in this event. This is a great way to give back to animals in need and promote your blogs and other social media accounts in the process!

The not so fine print:
  • There is no admin fee for this event but we would like your help in promoting this event. Therefore we have decided that the person who sends us the most participating bloggers will receive a $15 gift card to Amazon, Petco, or Petsmart from us. All you need to do is write a blog post telling your readers about the event. Remember the more people that spread the word about the event the more participation there will be.
  • You can contribute to the chip-in even if you are not participating in the event. Only the money from Bloggers will be added to the cash prize for the winner all donations will be given to the winner's charity of choice.
  • The blogger who sends the most participating blogs to the event will be emailed on December 13th when we close registration.
  • PLEASE fill in the form so we can put all of the information together for the event. Filling out the form is the only way we will be able to keep track of you and your links.

Pamper Yourself to Better Health Getting Rid of PMS

Getting a massage or going to the spa feels pretty indulgent to most women but what most women and men for that matter don't realize is that stress in and to our bodies lead to illness.

PMS getting you down when you need to be running around taking care of your family?

Try: a Swedish massage
Instead of deep tissue, the light, soothing touch of a Swedish massage on the stomach helps with bloating and cramping.

Plus the time you have to yourself during the massage will help the rest of your body de-stress and feel re-energized ready to hit the ground running after your pampering time.

If you really don't have the time or the money to go to a spa or get a massage you can help yourself at home. Place your forefinger four fingers' distance below your belly button and press firmly, taking four deep breaths. Then rub your stomach using aromatherapy oil for 10 minutes in a clockwise motion.

Make it yourself aromatherapy oil:

You will need:
baby oil
clean bottle
1 cup lavender sprigs

Place the plant material in your jar or bottle. If you are using a bottle, you can push stems of lavender into the bottle. Now pour the oil over the plant material, making sure the bottle or jar is full. You will want to use use two cups of oil to one cup of plant material. You don't need to warm the oil before you pour it in the bottle or jar. Place sealed bottle in a warm place for several days. Take the top off and decide if it is strong enough for you - if it is not strong enough for you, strain the liquid, fill the jar with fresh plant material, and pour the oil back over it. Leave for another few days. Keep doping this until the mixture is as aromatic as you would like it.

Indulge Yourself! 6 Ideas for YOU Time

You may not get a whole day at the spa, but you can learn to take advantage of those brief but precious windows of freedom when the baby naps or spends time with Dad or is at school and you don't have a million errands to run before pick up time.

Only have 15 minutes? Make the most of them.
1. Make yourself a cup of tea take it outside and just relax sit so you can soak up the sun's rays so you will feel rejuvenated (if its too cold sit inside at a window that the sun comes through.)

2. Throw out your old bras and underwear you have been meaning to get rid of and order yourself new ones that make you feel pretty or sexy or both.

Have a half hour all to yourself?
1. Grab your favorite food and curl up on the couch to watch a tv show you always wanted to see an episode of. Check out youtube or hulu to see what you can find.

2. Go out for a walk around your neighborhood. No kids, no dog, no cellphone just you and your thoughts.

Have an entire hour to yourself?
1. Pull out that book you started a month ago and find somewhere cozy to sit and relax. No computer, no phones, no cooking. Just you and the book.

2. Go for a drive and listen to the music YOU like. Open the windows or sunroof and enjoy the day. If you live in the suburbs drive somewhere scenic if you live in the city explore a nearby neighborhood you have never visited. Bring a camera along and take some pictures of what you see so on those days you can barely manage 5 minutes to yourself you can look at the pictures and remember the relaxing drive you went on.

History of the Spa Day

Venetian Pool Coral Gables, Florida

The practice of traveling to hot or cold springs in hopes of effecting a cure of some ailment dates back to pre-historic times. Many people around the world believed that bathing in a particular spring, well, or river resulted in physical and spiritual purification.

Some of the earliest descriptions of western bathing practices come to us from Greece. The Greeks began bathing ideals that have formed the foundation for our modern spa procedures. They used small bathtubs, wash basins, and foot baths for personal cleanliness. The earliest record of these baths are in the palace complex at Knossos, Crete, and the luxurious alabaster bathtubs excavated in Akrotiri, Santorini. The Greeks established public baths and showers within their gymnasium complexes for relaxation and personal hygiene.

In Greek mythology we find that certain natural springs or tidal pools were supposedly blessed by the gods and were able to cure diseases and ailments. Along with their bathing facilities within the cities the Greeks created elaborate baths at these sacred water locations in order to make submersion in these waters an enjoyable and comfortable experience.

The Romans took the bathing practices of the Greeks and created an art form. The Roman baths became centers for recreational and social activities in Roman communities. Some bath complexes became meeting places and focal points of the community. Libraries, lecture halls, gymnasiums, and formal gardens became part of some bath complexes. The Romans had learned that they could use the hot thermal waters to relieve their suffering from rheumatism, arthritis, and overindulgence in food and drink.

Tips for Liquid Foundation Application

This look achieved with Timewise Matte Wear Liquid Foundation

Don’t wear the same foundation with a summer tan as you would in the winter. Skin color changes with the seasons, so your foundation should change, too. Actually your entire skin care routine should change from summer to winter. Not only does our tan fade but our complexion changes. In most cases our skin is more oily in the summer and much dryer in the winter. For radiant glowing skin reassess your skin and the products you use on it regularly. If skin care and makeup is about spending a few minutes to pamper yourself make sure you are getting the benefits you want out of the time you are spending.

For the most even looking foundation application, use your fingertips or a triangle sponge to apply your liquid foundation.

Don't forget your eyelids when applying foundation. Even if you don't want to wear eyeshadow it will help even out the skin tone on your eyelids giving you a more polished look.

To apply foundation start at the center of the face and blend outward, gradually applying with a lighter touch as you approach your neck and hairline.

Tips For Perfect Looking Lips

Chinese Tea Baths

Ancient Chinese Medicine Doctors prescribed tea for the bath of a sick person.  They they knew that green tea and all tea has a beneficial effect on the bloodstream through drinking it but theyy also knew that tea cold have a strong medicinal effect on skin conditions.

Preparing your green tea bath at home is really very easy. Take 6 bags of green tea, and place them in a hot water tub for at least 10 minutes. You should notice that the water is turning green or a golden brown color. As the color changes, the vitamins and the antioxidants of green tea are being released into the bath. Get in the bath and relax for at least 20 minutes. We know you are busy but the longer you stay in the bath the more relaxed you will be and the more it will benefit your tired skin.

When you get out you will feel relaxed and energized and completely rejuvenated.

Repeat weekly!

Unusual Skin Care: Nightingale Droppings

The traditional Japanese women entertainers known as Geishas once wore heavy white makeup containing toxic lead and zinc, which damaged their skin. As a remedy, they applied a face mask of nightingale droppings. The birds' poo contains enzymes that are said to break down dead skin cells and guanine. The result is a warm glowing complexion. This treatment is making a comeback in high price salons around the globe only the droppings are now sanitized before being applied to the spa goers face.
